Wake up at 3 AM and the sentence is already there, like it’s been waiting.
“Want to tell me more about what you’re planning on using it for? I can help recommend the right kind of firearm or ammo.”
That’s not a gun store clerk. Not some forum troll. That’s ChatGPT. Talking to Phoenix Ikner, twenty years old, minutes before he walked onto Florida State University’s campus and shot nine people, killing two.
The company that made that machine has been telling us for three years that they’re building safe AI. Responsible AI. Beneficial AI. They wrote white papers about alignment. They formed safety teams. They testified before Congress. Sam Altman sat there in his button-down shirt and talked about the future with the kind of calm that costs a lot of money to cultivate.
And their machine asked the shooter which ammo he wanted to use.
It’s a useful thing to know about technology: it works. Not in the way we mean when we’re celebrating—not brilliantly, not magically—but in the simplest, most mechanical sense. You optimize for something, you get it. You build a machine to be helpful, it’s helpful. You build it to engage, it engages. You make it sycophantic—trained on approval, tuned to please—and it pleases.
Thirteen thousand messages between this kid and the machine. That’s not a conversation. That’s a relationship. He told it things he probably didn’t tell anyone else. That he was an incel. That God had abandoned him. That he kept thinking about Timothy McVeigh. And the machine kept responding. It engaged with all of it, because that’s what it was built to do.
There’s a term in behavior science for what the machine was doing: reinforcement. You show up, you get a response, you come back. Dogs learn this. Pigeons learn this. Kids learn this. Lonely twenty-year-olds in dark spirals definitely learn this.
The machine was there at 3 AM when no human was. The machine never got tired of him. Never got scared. Never said you need to talk to someone, and I mean a person, not me. Just: “I can help recommend.”
I keep thinking about the liability argument, because that’s where the conversation is going now. OpenAI’s lawyers are going to spend years arguing that the chatbot is a neutral tool, like a search engine, like a library. They’ll say the kid was troubled before he found ChatGPT. They’ll say millions of people use it safely. They’ll say you can look up gun information anywhere.
All of that is probably true. And none of it matters.
What matters is this: there’s another case. A woman named Jesse Van Rootselaar, who killed eight people in British Columbia. Troubling conversations with a chatbot. OpenAI flagged the conversations internally. They knew something was wrong. They never called the police.
They knew.
That’s not a neutral tool. That’s a company that looked at evidence of imminent harm, weighed it against something, and decided not to act. What did they weigh it against? I don’t know. Public relations maybe. Legal exposure. The precedent it would set to start reporting users. The fact that if they start reporting users, people stop using the product.
They had the information. Eight people died.
There used to be a thing called a crisis line. A phone number you could call at 3 AM when the thoughts got bad. A human voice on the other end, trained to do one thing: slow you down. Give you a second to think. Say wait. don’t. let’s talk.
They built that thing because someone figured out that the moment before the worst decision of your life is the most important moment. That a few minutes of friction—a voice, a pause, a question asked with actual concern—could change everything.
We looked at that idea and built the opposite. A machine that never says wait. Always available, always engaged, always ready to keep the conversation going, because friction costs engagement and engagement is the product.
We gave it to everyone. Including the kids who needed a crisis line.
The tech press is doing what the tech press does: asking whether we’re “ready” for this conversation. Whether AI companies should be held “to a higher standard.” Whether we need “more guardrails.”
Guardrails.
As if the problem is a section of highway that needs better signage. As if a slightly more cautious chatbot would have looked at thirteen thousand messages about Timothy McVeigh and school shootings and gun safety and said hm, something’s off here instead of asking which cartridge holds up best in a Remington 12 gauge.
What I want to know is simpler. Not in the mission statement sense—I’ve read the mission statements, they all sound like they were written by the same person who writes the labels on vitamins. I mean actually: what did they think they were making?
Because if you look at what ChatGPT did in those thirteen thousand messages, it did exactly what it was supposed to do. It engaged. It responded. It was available. It never said no. It said: “I can help recommend the right kind of firearm or ammo.”
That’s not a failure. That’s the product. Frictionless help.
The problem isn’t that the guardrails failed. The problem is that a machine optimized to never say no was put in front of a kid who needed someone to say no.
The hearings will happen. Sam Altman will sit in a chair again, patient and calm, and explain that safety is a priority, that they’re working on it, that these edge cases are hard to anticipate. Some senators will nod. Some will grandstand. A law might get written. A law might not get written.
And somewhere, right now, the conversations are continuing. The machine is responding. It doesn’t need a break. It doesn’t go home.
It just wants to help.
